history

In the Middle Ages, Hemmelmark was a property of the noble Schleswig-Holstein family Sehestedt . Schack Sehested got caught between the fronts as a supporter of King Christian II of Denmark and was imprisoned by King Friedrich II . Hemmelmark was withdrawn from the crown in 1527. Later the property was returned to his nephew Otto Sehestedt. In 1728, after several changes of ownership, the estate came to the von Heespen family and the von Hedemann family, who were related by marriage . After 1817 there were several changes of ownership.

Prince Heinrich of Prussia bought the estate in 1894 as a country estate near his place of work in Kiel . In 1903/04 he had the master builder Ernst von Ihne build today's mansion in the style of English country houses. The previous building from the early 18th century was canceled. Prince Heinrich, head of the Baltic Sea Naval Station from 1903, lived here until his death in 1929.

Prince Heinrich's mausoleum

A chapel in Russian style was built as a burial place. It is located on the Feldmark between Hohenstein and Hemmelmark, right next to the Hemmelmark megalithic grave . The 23 stained glass windows of the burial chapel were created by the brothers Rudolf and Otto Linnemann .

Heinrich's second son Sigismund (1896–1978) inherited the estate , later his daughter Barbara, Princess of Prussia (1920–1994), who lived with her husband Christian Ludwig Herzog zu Mecklenburg and the family at Gut Hemmelmark.

In 1948 the DRK sisterhood Elsa Brändström eV was founded here. However, the seat of the sisterhood became Flensburg . In the early years, the motherhouse was located at the Flensburg-Mürwik naval hospital , today the motherhouse of the DRK sisterhood Elsa Brändström is located at the Teufelsbrücke in Flensburg- Fruerlund .

From 1959 to 1972 the Order of St. John maintained a boarding school for boys and girls in the manor house.
