Barkelsby is a municipality on the Schwansen peninsula in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district in Schleswig-Holstein .

Surname

Barkelsby was mentioned in a document in 1542 as “Berkeißbu” and probably means “village of Biarnkil”, whereby by stands for village, settlement and Biarnkil is derived from the old Danish “biorn” for “bear” and “ketil” for “kettle”.

The place name Hemmelmark was first recorded in writing in 1462. He describes a clearing on the slope, to Danish at the height . Mark for a clearing or a field and old Danish * hæmil , mndt. Hamel for cliff, stone, height . Böhnrüh is probably a combination of ndt. Böhn for soil and either Rüh for a path in the forest or Danish. ryde for boggy terrain or Kratt (cf. Central Danish ry ). Rossee means horse lake on horseback (≈horse, cf. Old Norse rǫkn ). Westerschau comes from Danish and means western forest (cf. Danish skovforest ).

Barkelsby is located 1 km northeast of Eckernförde in the southern part of Schleswig . The Schwansenstrasse (B 203) runs south-east from Eckernförde to Kappeln , to the west the railway line from Kiel to Flensburg . The municipalities of Gammelby , Loose , Rieseby and Waabs border the municipality of Barkelsby .

The municipality includes the following districts: Böhnrüh (Danish: Bønry ), Engelsburg ( Engelsborg ), Hemmelmark Schmiede, Rögen, Rossee, Rosseemoor and the estates (partly including a settlement of the same name) Hemmelmark ( Himmelmark ), Hohenstein , Mohrberg, Neubarkelsby, and Westerschau ( Vesterskov ).

Outsourcing

On January 1, 1974, parts of the area with then more than 500 inhabitants were ceded to the city of Eckernförde .

Of the 13 seats in the municipal council, the SPD had eight seats since the local elections in 2008, while the CDU had five.

Of the 13 seats in the municipal council, the FWB community of voters had six seats since the 2013 local elections, the SPD five and the CDU two seats.

In 2018, 15 seats were available in the local elections, with one seat being an overhang seat and one seat being a majority seat. The FWB won 8 seats, the Active Citizens Association (ABB) received three seats, the SPD and CDU each have two seats.

In the municipality is the Hemmelmark estate , which was inhabited by Prince Heinrich of Prussia and where he is buried.

Gut Hohenstein

The manor house "Gut Hohenstein" with an attached local history museum was Kurt von Schröder's old age . The Hohenstein Landscape Park is no longer open to the public.
