Westerrönfeld (Low German Westerrünnfeld ) is an official community in the district of Rendsburg-Eckernförde in Schleswig-Holstein .

Geography and traffic

The place is located directly on the Kiel Canal . Neighboring municipalities are (clockwise, starting in the north): Rendsburg , Jevenstedt and Schülp . In earlier times there were some heather areas and inland dunes in the area of the municipality , of which only a few have survived.

From 1901 the place was a stop on the Rendsburger Kreisbahn , which drove from Rendsburg to Hohenwestedt . In 1957 this line was closed.

Westerrönfeld is on the federal highway 77 from Rendsburg to Itzehoe and the federal highway 202 , which leads from St. Peter-Ording via Rendsburg towards Kiel and joins the A 210 in Osterrönfeld ( junction Schacht-Audorf ) . The community is thus indirectly connected to the A 7 .

history

The place, which was located on an Eiderfurt on Ochsenweg , was first mentioned in 1437 in the Kiel Heritage Book. During the Thirty Years War , the Swedish troops besieging Rendsburg were stationed in Westerrönfeld, with looting in Westerrönfeld.

There has been a Jewish cemetery in the village since 1695, where Jewish citizens from Rendsburg were buried.

More than 100 people died of the plague in the 18th century. A cemetery was created especially for them outside the village.

The community originally belonged to the district (later Amt) Jevenstedt . Due to refugees who found a new home in Westerrönfeld, the number of residents grew from 1,500 to 2,500 after the Second World War. In 1948 the community left office. On January 1, 2001, Westerrönfeld gave up self-government and rejoined the Jevenstedt office.

On December 12, 1991 there was an assassination attempt on two employees of the waste water association in Westerrönfeld. A farmer from Fockbek, who shot the two officers, then drove his car loaded with explosives against the town hall in Fockbek . Then he shot himself.

coat of arms

The coat of arms and flag were approved on March 23, 1970.

Blazon : “A golden pole in blue, crossed and covered with a silver wave bar at the crossing point; in the first quarter a silver wagon wheel with eight spokes, in the fourth quarter a fallen silver anchor. "

In the past, Westerrönfeld was a village on the Eider , which was predominantly agricultural. Today it lies in the structure-changing access area of Rendsburg. The wave bar in the coat of arms marks not only the Eider, but also the Kiel Canal, which borders the community in the north. The anchor in the coat of arms indicates that the canal and earlier the Eider shipping meant participation in waterway traffic for the place. At the same time, the wave bar can be understood as a “talking” implementation of the place name “Feld bei der Rinne” (Low German: “Rönn”). What is meant is the Wehrau, which flows through the neighboring municipality of Osterrönfeld into the Kiel Canal. The tunnel under the canal, represented by the pole, leads from Westerrönfeld to Rendsburg. He is part of the federal highway 77, which leads through the place. The wagon wheel documents the volume of traffic. The shield color blue once again symbolizes the importance of the waterways for the place.

flag

In blue, two continuous narrow stripes forming a lying Latin cross, the horizontal one white and undulating, the vertical yellow and covered by the horizontal stripe at the intersection, immediately next to the bar in the upper field a white wagon wheel with eight spokes, in the lower field white, fallen anchor.

economy

The place was originally characterized by agriculture, fishing, seafaring and shipbuilding. Today, due to the proximity to Rendsburg and the transport connections to Kiel and the federal motorway, 7 industrial areas are being expanded.
