Emkendorf (Low German: Emkendörper, Danish: Emekenby) is a municipality in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district in Schleswig-Holstein.

Geography and traffic

Emkendorf is located about 13 kilometers southeast of Rendsburg in the Westensee Nature Park . The federal motorway 7 and the Neumünster – Flensburg railway line run to the west .

It is located in a hilly, wooded and lake-rich landscape and contains three nature reserves.

history

The place Emkendorf was first mentioned in 1190 as Imekenthorp - named after the owner, the knight Emcko von Westensee , a vassal of the Counts of Schauenburg and Holstein - but it went under as early as 1600. Today's municipality of Emkendorf is the largest municipality in the Nortorf-Land district in terms of population and area and encloses the manor and the villages of Bokelholm and Kleinvollstedt.

Bokelholm was first mentioned in 1630 as a Meierhof and has a volunteer fire brigade at the local level with over 20 emergency services who provide fire protection and general help.

Kleinvollstedt also belonged to the estate, but is probably older. There has been a school in Kleinvollstedt for 300 years.

Gut Emkendorf

Manor and courtyard of the Emkendorf estate

After 1743, Jean Henri Desmercières had the manor house of the manor, begun by his predecessor Cuno Josua von Bülow, completed in the late Baroque style. Friedrich Karl von Reventlow , who had taken over the estate from his father, Lord Chamberlain Detlev Reventlow, in 1783, had the Saxon master builder Carl Gottlob Horn (1734–1807) remodel it in a classical style. For example, a lower, classicist ceiling was drawn under the baroque stucco ceiling and the park, which had been designed in baroque style, was adapted to the new taste of the time. Inside the manor house is richly decorated and equipped.

At the instigation of his wife Julia , née Schimmelmann and daughter of the Danish finance minister, he received a large number of famous personalities of the era, including Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock , Matthias Claudius and Johann Caspar Lavater as well as La Fayette . These debating circles , which were also called the Emkendorfer Kreis , gave the estate the name “Weimar des Nordens”. The estate was owned by the Counts of Reventlow from 1765 to 1929. Around 1600 it was the largest estate in Schleswig-Holstein, and it included many surrounding villages, farms and lakes.

After 1929, a large part of the mobile facility was lost, but otherwise no major structural changes took place. The wall-mounted equipment of the house has been preserved in impressive completeness. - The estate is located on the Hasensee, which was previously connected to the Westensee , and has an extensive landscape park in the English style , i.e. a park that was modeled on the taste of the times according to nature. Large parts of it are still preserved.

At the end of the Second World War , war refugees were quartered in the manor house , and after the surrender on May 8, a British garrison moved into the building.

The mansion is still privately owned. It has been extensively restored and is known for its concerts, including those of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival .

The “Great Hall” is also rented as a wedding hall by many bridal couples.
