history

There are two theories as to how the name of the place, first mentioned in 1220, developed. One approach goes back to Thietbernus v. Wakenbek, who settled in the area of today's village. In the course of time Wakenbek became the name Wattenbek.

The other approach for the origin of the name goes back to a brook (Low German "Bek"). "Watten" means "shallow spot on a stream or river". The name of the first settlements in this place was built on a shallow spot by the stream.
