Maria Magdalenen Church

Maria Magdalenen Church in Bovenau

The Bovenauer Church was donated after the Battle of Bornhöved (1227) by Count Adolf IV von Schauenburg as a " Thank You Church ". Since Mary Magdalene is the daily saint of July 22nd, the day of battle, the church was consecrated to her. The construction of field stones dates from this time, the bronze, heated baptismal font from the 14th century. After the introduction of the Reformation , the owners of the surrounding estates contributed to the church's furnishings as church patrons . Wulf Jasper von Brockdorff donated several paintings to the church and had an extension built on the north side of the church as a mausoleum for himself and his wife. At the end of the 18th century the church got its wooden steeple. In 1844 the interior of the church was completely redesigned, with almost all medieval inventory removed and a pulpit altar purchased. This was replaced in 1960 by a simple stone table with a triumphal cross from the 15th century hanging over it.

The “Wakendorfer Mühle” nature experience area was recognized in 2009 by the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas in Schleswig-Holstein. This runs along the "Bovenau" stream in the southeast of the municipality.
