Legends and founding myths
There was a corpse in the moor, nobody wanted to bury it. Finally the inhabitants of this village were found willing to do so. For this they were given the moor and the name Mörel.
At Mörel there is a paddock called Hünjekamp. It belonged to a giant who lived with Mörel. Once a farmer from Mörel drove his cart into a deep ditch and got stuck. Eight horses couldn't get the wagon out again. Then the giant came to the farmer and asked him: "What will you give me if I take the wagon out again?" The farmer says he wants to give him a piece of land. Then the giant stands under the car and lifts it out again. The farmer has to give the giant a piece of land and that is still called Hünjekamp today.
The giant also came to thresh the farmers. Then they had to take the boards off the floor, otherwise the giant would not have been able to stand on the hall. The farmers wanted to get rid of the giant because he always charged them so much. Once they found him in the forest, where he was lying and sleeping for lunch. So they attacked him, beat him to death and buried him there in the forest. But they were afraid he might rise from the earth again. That is why they brought three large stones, one on his head, the other on his stomach and the third on his feet. The stones were lying in one line in the “Breedenhop” for a long time and people called them the giant beds.
