Rade b. Hohenwestedt (Low German: Raa ') is a municipality. It is located in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district in Schleswig-Holstein . Rade belongs to the parish of Hohenwestedt.

Geography and traffic

Rade is about 19 kilometers west of Neumünster and 32 kilometers south of Rendsburg in the Aukrug nature park , between the Nindorfer ridge and the Buckener Au. In addition to sandy forest and arable land, the municipal area mainly consists of moist to boggy meadows. The Mühlenbach and Hasselbek flow through the community .

To the west, the federal highway 77 runs at some distance from Rendsburg to Itzehoe and to the south the federal highway 430 from Neumünster towards Schenefeld (Steinburg district) and the Neumünster – Heide railway line .

history

The name Rade indicates the clearing of forest area. The first written mention of the royal water mill in the village was made in 1568, but the village itself was not mentioned until 1602.

Legends and founding myths

According to an old legend, pure beer flows through the Spiekerbek, which rises from a spring in the village, at midnight. This legend was passed down through the "Kallies" inn, which was located in the immediate vicinity until the 1980s, in which the landlady entered the restaurant with a tray at midnight through the door facing the Spiekerbek and distributed free beer, referring to the magical spring.

52% of the population are Protestant, 3% Catholic. The parish of Hohenwestedt with its Peter-Pauls-Kirche is responsible for the Lutherans , for the few Catholics the parish of St. Ansgar , based in Rendsburg , whose next branch church (Holy Family) is in Hohenwestedt.

Attractions

The royal water mill, in which the farmers of the region had to grind their grain for several centuries at the behest of the Danish king, was in operation until the middle of the 20th century and was even used for electricity at times. After decommissioning, the mechanics were removed and made available to the Schleswig-Holstein open-air museum in Molfsee . Today the mill is privately owned. The mill belonged to the three local mill ponds as well as the formerly connecting mill stream, which has meanwhile been diverted and expanded in a natural way.
