Hohenwestedter Peter-Pauls-Kirche

The Evangelical Lutheran Peter-Pauls-Kirche is a classical church in Hohenwestedt in the German state Schleswig-Holstein . It was built in the center of the village in 1769/70 after the former church there burned down to the ground.

history

In 1215 a church in Wetzstede, today Hohenwestedt, is mentioned for the first time and is referred to as a parish church in a document dated February 15, 1217 by Archbishop Gerhard von Bremen . The church burned down in 1616 and was rebuilt with the support of the neighboring parishes within four years and consecrated in 1620. On March 14, 1768, the second building also fell victim to a fire disaster and was rebuilt by the royal church builder Johann Gottfried Rosenberg from Schleswig in 1769/70. The organ at that time was made by the Itzehoe organ builder Johann Daniel Busch .

Exterior construction

The church building was rebuilt in the classical style as a brick hall church with a three-sided east end. The pointed arch windows were subsequently extended (1901). The west tower is divided into two storeys by a cornice . He is 38 meters high. Its copper-covered, curved hood shows semicircular recesses for the clock faces of the tower clock. The upturned cornice below the dials forms the second part of the circle.

Portal by Joh. Georg Moser

The church has a remarkable sandstone portal designed by the Eutin court sculptor Johann Georg Moser . Rustic pilasters are arranged on either side of a door with a skylight. The plaque above the door reminds in Latin of the destruction and reconstruction of the church. The inscription reads:

DEO OM IUVANTE
TEMPLO PRISTINO COMBUSTO
D. XIV MART. MDCCLXVIII.
ÆDES HÆSACRÆ ET TURRIS FUNDITUS
EXSTRUCTÆ SUNT. A o MDCCLXIX
SOLI DEO GLORIA

A crowned monogram cartouche closes the portal at the top. It shows the mirror monogram of the Danish King Christian VII .

inner space

The altar consists of four classical columns, the triangular pediment and a crucifix carved according to a Gothic model. In 1854 the interior of the church was fundamentally redesigned. The uniform furnishings by Johann Georg Moser, in which the organ was above the pulpit altar , has been significantly changed. When the interior was redesigned, the altar area was raised by three steps and the central part became semicircular. To the right and left, the room was separated by a gallery of columns and square posts. The semicircular railing around the altar also dates from that time.
