Johann Gottfried Rosenberg (* around October 1709 in Woldegk ; † June 4, 1776 in Schleswig ) was a German-Danish architect in the Rococo period .

Life

Rosenberg was the son of a former bricklayer and builder, his exact date of birth is unknown; he was baptized on October 20, 1709 in Woldegk, Mecklenburg-Strelitz . After an apprenticeship as a bricklayer, first for two years with his father (from February 24, 1727 to February 1729) and then for a year with Martin Ciliaxen in Greifswald , he passed the journeyman's examination (acquittal) on February 24, 1730. He worked in Schleswig- Holstein as court architect of Duke Friedrich Karl (Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Plön) . For him he designed the stables, the riding arena and what was later called the Prince's House at Plön Castle . In 1736 he became a citizen of the city of Kiel . From 1740 he was also active in Denmark, where he took up residence in 1752. His early works include the manor house at Margård, Vigerslev Sogn (Nordfyns Kommune) on Funen , which is influenced by French country house architecture.

He worked with Nicolai Eigtved on a number of projects in Copenhagen in the early 1750s. These include the mansions Dehn , Bernstorff and Berckentin in Bredgade in the district Frederiksstaden , which was built at that time, and the manor Frederiksdal in northern Copenhagen on the shore of Bagsværd Sø .

In 1760 Rosenberg returned to Schleswig-Holstein as a ducal builder. Here, among other things, he was responsible for the new building of the Royal Mint in Altona in 1771.

His most important works were Gravenstein Castle (1758–59) and Augustenburg Castle (Denmark) (1770–76).

As an architect, he planned the Schleswig-Holstein churches in Hohenfelde (1767), Horst (1768–71) and Hohenwestedt (1770/71). The Kappeln cemetery chapel (1767) is attributed to him. He also has expert opinions and designs for the churches in Bad Oldesloe , Großenaspe and Wilster , as well as 10 plans (seven of which are still preserved but not executed) for Breitenburg Castle (1763/64).

Rosenberg married Catharina Dorothea (née Kühnel) in Kiel. Their son Georg Erdman Rosenberg (1739–1788), who also became a master builder and architect, was born here.
