history

Presumably the area of Hohenwestedt was already 3000 BC. Populated by farmers, which is proven by finds from the Neolithic period. The greatest relic from this time is the " bowl stone ", a huge boulder into which bowls (depressions for offerings) were incorporated. Today the stone is placed in the town center. There are burial mounds from the Bronze Age in the Glüsing district , in which gifts for the dead were found.

The parish Hohenwestedt was first mentioned in a document in 1217 as Wetsstede , which means something like "settlement in the forest" in its original meaning. Due to its favorable location on the north-south connection of the Ochsenweg and the east-west connection Lübsche Trade , Hohenwestedt was soon led to an economic boom. This favorable location was also a disadvantage, as armies also used these roads and often plundered the entire place. In 1616 and 1768 the place was ravaged by devastating fires, which destroyed almost the entire place including the church.

A district court was set up in 1867 and existed until 1975. In 1877 Hohenwestedt was connected to the railway network with the inauguration of the Neumünster-Heide line. With the Rendsburger Kreisbahn in 1901 a meter-gauge connection to Rendsburg was established , which was extended to Schenefeld in 1916 . This railway had to stop operating in 1956.

In 1924 and 1925 local groups of the NSDAP with up to 40 founding members were formed in Hohenwestedt, Nindorf, Osterstedt, Wapelfeld and Tappendorf . In those years "Nordmarkthings" were held in the municipality of Vaasbüttel. On August 9 and 10, 1930, Adolf Hitler stayed in the villa of the NSDAP district leader Wilhelm Hamkens , who had worked as a lawyer and notary in Hohenwestedt since 1920. In 1932, several SS men carried out a hand grenade attack on the house of an SPD supporter in Glüsing.

In the Reichstag elections in March 1933 , the NSDAP in Hohenwestedt received the highest share of votes with 72.2%, ahead of the DNVP with 5.8%, the SPD with 18.4% and the KPD with 1.7%.

In 1938 the districts of Vaasbüttel and Glüsing were incorporated.

After the war, many refugees came to the area and the population rose to over 5,300 (1946). In the post-war period there were business settlements.

The German administration and a service center for the Danish toy manufacturer Lego were located in Hohenwestedt . The service center was closed in 2006 as a result of restructuring measures.

From 2007 to 2011 Hohenwestedt managed the administrative business of the offices of Aukrug , Hanerau-Hademarschen and Hohenwestedt-Land as part of an administrative community . Hohenwestedt has been a member of the Mittelholstein office since 2012. The headquarters of the Mittelholstein office is also in Hohenwestedt.

coat of arms

The coat of arms and flag were approved on May 5, 1961.

Blazon : "In the blue-silver split shield, a wheel paw cross in confused colors."

The bowl stone found in the municipality of Hohenwestedt bears a wheel cross as a cultic symbol from prehistoric times, which can be found in the coat of arms and thus represents the long local history. In pre-Christian times, the wheel cross may have been a symbol of the sun. In 1217 "Wetstede" was mentioned as a church location; after this time the wheel cross can be understood as a Christian symbol. The location at the intersection of the "Lübschen Trade" and the "Ochsenweg" linked Hohenwestedt with the four cities of Rendsburg, Neumünster, Itzehoe and Heide. This advantageous geographic traffic situation can also be recognized in the wheel cross. With regard to the most recent times, the wheel should symbolize the social and economic progress, represented by the settling industry and the brisk construction activity. The closed circle around the cross therefore emphasizes the community spirit of the residents. The splitting of the shield and the “mix-up” of the colors expresses the inhibiting and promoting factors whose varied interplay has determined the development of the community.

The coat of arms was designed by the Brunsbüttel heraldist Willy "Horsa" Lippert .

flag

The flag shows the wheel paw cross of the town's coat of arms in the blue and white split Liek, in the flying end nine alternating blue and white stripes.
