The Aukrug Nature Park is a 380 square kilometer nature park in the center of the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein in the Holstein region ( Rendsburg-Eckernförde and Steinburg districts ). From its foundation to 2013, the sponsors were a company formed by both circles, which in 2014 transferred the sponsorship to the Aukrug Nature Park Association.

Geographical location

The nature park is only a few kilometers west of the A 7 motorway near Neumünster . The landscape is characterized by moraines , forest , heather and a multitude of ponds . The most important rivers in the nature park are the Stör in the south with tributaries Kirchweddelbach , Bullenbach , Wegebek in the middle part the smaller Bünzau with its tributaries Buckener Au , Fuhlenau , Höllenau , Kapellenbach , Tönsbek , Sellbek and Glasbek and in the northern part the Brammer Au .

The near-natural forests with the springs, rivers and ponds typical of the nature park offer habitats for many endangered animal and plant species. At home in the Aukrug are u. a. the black stork , the eagle owl , many species of bats , the red kite , the garlic toad and the newt . The wild arnica meadows are also unique for Schleswig-Holstein .

Heck cattle have been kept for the care of some areas since 2002 .

In 2001 the Naturschutzring Aukrug eV was founded with the help of the Schrobach Foundation . Through this amalgamation of various nature conservation associations, the different interests of the land users in the region should be brought together and effective nature conservation work should be achieved. This procedure has become known nationwide as the Aukruger way . In the first year of its existence, the nature conservation ring was able to carry out or prepare several projects, including the rewetting of the Viertshöher Moor .

The region is well developed for tourism and has an extensive network of riding, cycling and hiking trails. The Käsestraße runs through the nature park in the southern part . For hikers, the nature park path connects five nature parks in Schleswig-Holstein. On the A 7, an information board about landscapes and sights along the motorways indicates the nature park.
