The Boxberg was pushed up by glaciers during the Saale glaciation (up to 120,000 years ago). The mountain, which is mainly forested with beeches, was almost completely cut down before the beginning of the 20th century. After that, the area was predominantly with heather covered. In the course of time, the forest has predominated again in the area, the heather areas have been pushed back to around 7–8 hectares. The mountain shows a sparse population of mainly pines and beeches. In 2007 the charitable Kurt and Erika Schrobach Foundation acquired the area with the support of the State of Schleswig-Holstein.
