The Westensee Nature Park is located in the city triangle Kiel - Neumünster - Rendsburg in the moraine landscape of the East Holstein hill country. It is an institution according to Section 29a of the State Nature Conservation Act (LNatSchG) for Schleswig-Holstein from 2010. On December 19, 2016, the association “Naturpark Westensee Obere Eider eV” based in Bordesholm took over the sponsorship . Originally, the district of Rendsburg-Eckernförde was responsible for this nature park.

location

The eponymous Westensee , 692 hectares in size, is located in the northern third of the approximately 25,000 hectare nature park. Within its area, the A 7 , A 210 and A 215 motorways form a triangle, the southern tip of which is reached by the Bordesholm - Nortorf line . The northern border forms an arch of the Kiel Canal between Sehestedt and the Kiel district of Suchsdorf. In the northeast the nature park ends before Kronshagen and Kiel. In the south, Neumünster and Aukrug are outside. The small community of Oldenhütten forms a border point in the west.

Landscape image

The landscape was created during the last Ice Age and is characterized by hills, valleys, forests, fields, moors, lakes, swamps, small rivers, cliffs, gravel ridges and sandbanks. At the beginning of the 19th century for came Ostholstein typical Knicks (hedgerows) to do so.

During the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival there are regular events at Gut Emkendorf . For hikers, the nature park path connects the five nature parks in Schleswig-Holstein .

Estates, mansions

Archeological

Only a remnant is visible of the burial mounds of the Bronze Age . Most of them have been leveled by intensive plowing. Some have carried away grave robbers. Preserved examples can be found southeast of Eisendorf , northeast of Groß Vollstedt , on the Sandberg in Langwedel .

Since 2019 Anne Katrin Kittmann, Mayor of Achterwehr , has been the managing director of the registered association "Westensee Nature Park - Obere Eider". Eike Fandrey is chairman; his deputies are Klaus Langer and Heinz Dieter Gröning.
