The Westensee Nature Park is located in the city triangle Kiel - Neumünster - Rendsburg in the moraine landscape of the East Holstein hill country. It is an institution according to Section 29a of the State Nature Conservation Act (LNatSchG) for Schleswig-Holstein from 2010. On December 19, 2016, the association “Naturpark Westensee Obere Eider eV” based in Bordesholm took over the sponsorship . Originally, the district of Rendsburg-Eckernförde was responsible for this nature park.
location
The eponymous Westensee , 692 hectares in size, is located in the northern third of the approximately 25,000 hectare nature park. Within its area, the A 7 , A 210 and A 215 motorways form a triangle, the southern tip of which is reached by the Bordesholm - Nortorf line . The northern border forms an arch of the Kiel Canal between Sehestedt and the Kiel district of Suchsdorf. In the northeast the nature park ends before Kronshagen and Kiel. In the south, Neumünster and Aukrug are outside. The small community of Oldenhütten forms a border point in the west.
Landscape image
The landscape was created during the last Ice Age and is characterized by hills, valleys, forests, fields, moors, lakes, swamps, small rivers, cliffs, gravel ridges and sandbanks. At the beginning of the 19th century for came Ostholstein typical Knicks (hedgerows) to do so.
