geography
The district area essentially comprises the eastern part of the Wagrien peninsula in the Schleswig-Holstein hill country , which protrudes into the Baltic Sea between the Bay of Kiel and the Bay of Lübeck, as well as the offshore island of Fehmarn , which is connected to the mainland by the Fehmarnsund Bridge as part of the Vogelfluglinie . The Ostholstein district, together with the Danish Storstrøms Office, forms the Fehmarnbelt European region , in which cross-border projects can receive special funding.
history
The Ostholstein district was created on April 26, 1970 as part of the district reform in Schleswig-Holstein from the districts of Oldenburg in Holstein and Eutin (former principality of Lübeck ). It is the circle in Schleswig-Holstein, where the proportion of office-free cities and communities is greatest. The layout of the communities in the old district of Eutin is related to the administrative structures in the former Grand Duchy of Oldenburg .
