Until December 31, 2002, Westfehmarn was a municipality on the island of Fehmarn .

On January 1, 1978, the former communities of Dänschendorf auf Fehmarn (before 1975 Dänschendorf) and Petersdorf auf Fehmarn were merged to form the new community of Westfehmarn.

Since January 1, 2003, Westfehmarn has formed the city of Fehmarn together with the former municipalities Landkirchen auf Fehmarn , Bannesdorf auf Fehmarn and the city of Burg auf Fehmarn.

However, Westfehmarn still has its own area code (04372) today.

The following 14 villages (all independent municipalities until 1937, when they were incorporated into Dänschendorf and Petersdorf) formed the municipality of Westfehmarn from 1978:

Petersdorf was the largest place in the community, which also has the Johanniskirche and a primary school.

Sports

In Westfehmarn there are the two sports clubs TSV Westfehmarn and FC Dänschendorf, both of which offer football, among other things.
