The House of Nature is a natural history museum in Cismar in Schleswig-Holstein .
Collection and research areas
In 11 exhibition rooms are minerals , fossils exhibited and preserved animals such as birds, insects and mammals. One focus is the collection and exhibition of snails and mussels. Around 5000 different species of mollusks are exhibited in the House of Nature . The museum thus has the largest exhibition of molluscs in Germany ( mussel museum ). The much more extensive research collection of snails and mussels in the House of Nature - Cismar comprises several million specimens. The House of Nature - Cismar is an international research center for molluscs and the contact for all questions concerning mollusks. Since 1993 it has been the contact and board address for the German Malacoological Society , which, as an international specialist society, has been connecting German-speaking mollusc scientists since 1868.
In addition, the House of Nature is certified by the state of Schleswig-Holstein as an educational institution for sustainability .
history
The House of Nature was opened in 1979. In 1995 the museum moved to a larger building, the former Lindenhof . A support association was founded in 1991.
The 40th anniversary of the House of Nature was celebrated in a festive event on June 30, 2019.
Honors
- The founders of the museum, Marie-Luise and Ottfried Wiese, were awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on September 5, 2002 for their decades of voluntary work for the benefit of natural history education and research in Schleswig-Holstein .
- On December 2, 2009, the Ostholstein district awarded its 2009 Culture Prize to the House of Nature for its special services to the care of natural history with the establishment and operation of a natural history museum.
- The current director of the museum, Vollrath Wiese, was awarded the Cross of Merit on the ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany on June 28, 2011 for his honorary scientific work as an expert of the Federal Environment Ministry within the meaning of the Washington Convention on the Protection of Species and as chairman of the German Malacozoological Society.
Publications
The House of Nature Cismar publishes the Malacozoology publications from the House of Nature - Cismar ( ISSN 0936-2959 ). This privately published journal is open to topics from all fields of malacozoology; it appears at irregular intervals with one or two issues per year.
