The Neustädter Bucht is the western part of the Lübeck Bay , which in turn is part of the Mecklenburg Bay of the Baltic Sea . It is located in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein .

The most important port on the Neustadt Bay, which can be defined by an imaginary line between Niendorf and Pelzerhaken off the coast of Wagrien , is Neustadt in Holstein . The Pelzerhaken lighthouse was built by the Danes in 1843 as a beacon for navigation in Neustädter Bucht . It is still in operation today after renovations in 1936.

The Neustädter Bucht gained tragic notoriety during the Second World War in 1945 through one of the greatest maritime disasters , the sinking of the Cap Arcona concentration camp prisoner ship . There is a Cap Arcona Museum in Neustadt .

Since January 2007, a speed limit for pleasure craft has been in effect to improve the safety of bathers and sailors . According to the regulations of the Waterways and Shipping Directorate North , motorboats and personal watercraft may not be driven faster than 15 km / h in a two-kilometer-wide strip on the coast from Travemünde to Neustadt .

Since May 2012, the regulation on the prohibition of entering the Neustädter Bucht with certain vehicles (NeustädterBuchtFzgV) has also applied. It prescribes a sound limit for motor boats and jet skis (personal watercraft).
