Location of the municipality of Sehestedt in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district | ||
Sehestedt (Sesteth in the High Middle Ages, Danish: Sehested ) is a municipality in the district of Rendsburg-Eckernförde in Schleswig-Holstein . Feldscheide, Freienberg, Gruhl, Hammer, Hohenfelde and Steinwarf are in the municipality.
Geography and traffic
Sehestedt is located northeast of Büdelsdorf on the Kiel Canal . The municipality lies on both sides of the canal and is the only place that was cut into two parts by the construction of the canal in 1887–1895. These are connected by a ferry which, like all canal crossings, can be used day and night free of charge. The A 7 / E 45 runs about 10 kilometers to the west .
history
The place was first mentioned in 1282. The Romanesque stone church of St. Peter and Paul, which is now located directly on the canal, was built at the beginning of the 13th century and first mentioned in 1318.
On December 10, 1813, during the Sixth Coalition War, there was a battle in Sehestedt . The Danes fighting on the side of France under General Friedrich von Hessen-Kassel managed to prevail against the resistance of the Allied Northern Army under General Ludwig von Wallmoden-Gimborn and retreat to the fortress of Rendsburg.
On September 11, 1974, six Scottish paratroopers had a fatal accident during an airborne exercise during the Bold Guard maneuver in the municipality. This resulted not only in personal contacts to Scotland, but also in the Highland Games that have been held in Sehestedt since 2001 .
Good Sehestedt
Sehestedt is one of the oldest manors in the old Duchy of Schleswig . The manor of the estate was built in 1728 in place of a castle. The moat was filled in in 1865. Many of the buildings on the estate, which is still used for agriculture, are listed as historical monuments. The Schleswig-Holstein noble family von Sehestedt , named after the estate, died out with Carl Ludwig Christiansen von Sehested (t) (December 6, 1815– December 22, 1882); Even today a North Jutian family, which took the name Sehested and the coat of arms of the Schleswig family, is widespread with some lines in Denmark . Important statesmen came from this family (see: Sehested ).
