Manfred Jessen-Klingenberg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Manfred Jessen-Klingenberg (born November 13, 1933 in Norderstapel , † April 1, 2009 in Oldenburg in Holstein ) was a German historian . He is considered "one of the most prominent state historians in Schleswig-Holstein ."

Life

Manfred Jessen-Klingenberg grew up in Stapelholm and attended the Hermann Tast School in Husum . After graduating from high school, he began studying history and Latin philology at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel , which he completed with a doctorate and the state examination for a higher teaching post. In 1962 he became a research assistant at the chair for Schleswig-Holstein and Nordic history under Alexander Scharff . From 1977 to 1998 Jessen-Klingenberg was a teacher of history and Latin at the Kronwerk grammar school in Rendsburg , interrupted by a secondment as a teacher at the historical seminar at Kiel University (1986 to 1990). At the same time, he taught between 1991 and 2000 at the University of Education in Kiel and from 1994 at the Faculty of Education at the University of Kiel. In 2000 he was appointed honorary professor at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel. He continued teaching, as well as his journalistic work, until a few months before his death.

The history of Schleswig-Holstein - from early to contemporary history - in research, teaching and other communication media was the focus of Jessen-Klingenberg's work. In this context, parallel to his university, school and adult education activities, he was (co-) editor of numerous state and regional historical publications and periodicals: Journal of the Society for Schleswig-Holstein History , Sources and Research on the History of Schleswig-Holstein (1990 to 1995), Announcements from the Canal Association (1980 to 2008), Yearbook Democratic History . In addition, he worked "as an author of expert statements on the development of the regional historical landscape and as a consultant for historical or museum projects," u. a. in committees of the Schleswig-Holsteinisches Heimatbund , in the advisory board of the Nordfriisk Instituut (1968 to 1984, from 1976 to 1980 as its spokesman) and in the advisory board for history . From October 1998 until his death, Jessen-Klingenberg was chairman of the board of trustees of the Institute for Schleswig-Holstein Contemporary and Regional History.

The focus of his research interests lay in the Schleswig-Holstein canal history from the old Eider Canal to the Kiel Canal , the constitutional and national movement of the 19th century, the history of German-Danish relations since the time of enlightened absolutism, including minority and borderland problems as well as the history of the Christian-Albrechts-Universität and the history of Northern Elbia during the Weimar Republic and during National Socialism. The essay on the wording of the proclamation of the republic by Philipp Scheidemann , published in 1968 in the journal Geschichte in Wissenschaft und Studium , stands out from the early research work. The source-critical investigation "repeatedly cited in the scientific literature", in which he developed the "prevailing [...] narrative about Scheidemann's appearance" from then on, is still considered "not out of date" fifty years later.

Jessen-Klingenberg was considered an "authority" in Schleswig-Holstein historical research. His writings and essays were, as it was said, characterized by a “well-known clear style and stringent line of thought”. He was certified as having an "unusual breadth of professional competence", which resulted from his pronounced general historical interest, which knew no chronological or systematic limitations.

Awards and honors

In 1998, Jessen-Klingenberg was awarded the Lornsen chain of the Schleswig-Holstein Homeland Federation. In the same year, on the occasion of his 65th birthday, the commemorative publication Standpunkte on the recent history of Schleswig-Holstein was published (see publications). In 2008 he was named Honorary Editor of the Democratic History Yearbook . A posthumous honorary colloquium in his memory, originally planned as a public ceremony for his 75th birthday, was organized by the Institute for Schleswig-Holstein Contemporary and Regional History on November 20, 2009 in the Schleswig State Archives.
