founding

The previous institution, the IZRG, was newly founded in 1992 by the state government of Schleswig-Holstein because, in the opinion of the SPD Schleswig-Holstein, which formed the government, and some Schleswig-Holstein history associations that were established in many places in Schleswig-Holstein from the end of the 1970s to research the Nazi era, and independent researchers on Nazi history, the previous research on contemporary history and the Nazi era at the historical seminar of Kiel University had largely been considered inadequate. The regional historian responsible at the time still regarded the phase of National Socialism as “not particularly interesting political landscape in terms of contemporary history”. The initiative to found a new institute for history came from the “ Working Group for Economic and Social History Schleswig-Holstein ”, the “ Working Group for Research into National Socialism in Schleswig-Holstein ” (“AKENS”) and the “ Advisory Board for the History of the SPD” Workers' Movement and Democracy in Schleswig-Holstein ”(“ Advisory Board for History ”for short) and Kurt Hamer , member of the SPD state parliament, who is very committed to culture . The board of trustees - today the “advisory board” - belonged to the institute and was supposed to accompany and advise the institute. From the beginning the “Working Group for Social and Economic History”, “AKENS” and the “Advisory Board for History” were represented on the Board of Trustees. Later, the criticized Kiel University was also represented. A key figure on the board of trustees was Manfred Jessen-Klingenberg , who was chairman of the board of trustees from 1998 until his death. The first three directors of the IZRG were Uwe Danker, Detlef Korte , the former AKENS spokesman, and the historian Gerhard Paul . Soon a big dispute arose in the board of trustees, between the directors and both bodies, which did not end even after Detlef Kortes' suicide in 1995. The dispute led to the fact that the extension of Uwe Danker's position in 1999 was jeopardized, among other things, because the position holder Danker was not included on the list of the appointment committee. a. the colleague Paul belonged to. Danker finally prevailed with legal help and started a new beginning of the institute with his colleague Robert Bohn in 1999 after Paul had left the institute. On November 9, 2002, the institute celebrated its 10th birthday in Schleswig with a conference on "National Socialism in the Province" in the presence of the Minister of Education of Schleswig-Holstein Ute Erdsiek-Rave and numerous guests. Erdsiek-Rave praised the institute, which has proven itself. At the event, Professor Bohn said that the institute has now become a model for success. According to the newspaper's report, the Greens in Schleswig-Holstein were of the opinion that “the institute had come out of turbulent phases in calm waters”. Something similar could be heard from the FDP and the CDU. Since then, the institute has completed many other assignments and has a large number of publications.
