Who is who? The German Who's Who was an encyclopedia of persons that was first published in 1905 under the title Wer ist's? appeared. The publisher stated: "It is the German equivalent of the English-language Who's Who founded in 1847 "; however, there was no connection. The 2013/2014 edition contains around 25,000 short biographies. The last edition was published in 2015. In February 2017 the weristwer.de website went offline.

history

The reference work was published in 1905 by Herrmann AL Degener under the title Wer ist's? Contemporaries lexicon established. Further editions appeared, the ninth in 1928 still during the republic. In the era of National Socialism 1935, the tenth edition appeared.

After the Second World War , another edition appeared in 1948 under the current title Who is who? , 1951 Walter Habel took over the editor. The publisher was the Arani-Verlag in Berlin up to the sixteenth edition (1970) , then the Societäts-Verlag in Frankfurt am Main up to the nineteenth edition (1977) . Since 1979 appeared Who's who? at Schmidt-Römhild in Lübeck.

The 49th edition was published in 2010. It contains around 30,000 short biographies and around 1,800 portrait photos. Living personalities from public life are entered who, according to the editorial team, “have achieved remarkable achievements and have become known as a result”. In 2011 the anniversary edition (50th edition) was published, it contains around 25,000 short biographies with around 1,300 portrait photos. The 2015/16 edition delivered in 2015 remained the last; in 2017, the website www.weristwer.de belonging to the plant was switched off.

The work was also available on CD-ROM and can be downloaded from the Internet for a fee.

According to the publisher, inclusion in Who is Who? cannot be bought. Only personalities were accepted who had become known through “remarkable achievements”, based on an extensive catalog of criteria. The publication was free of charge; however, for the printing of portrait photos “a cost reimbursement of 19 euros per photo for image processing was requested”.
