Old peat press in the Viertshöher Moor

The Viertshöher Moor is a moor near the Böken district of the municipality of Aukrug in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district , Schleswig-Holstein .

The approximately 20  hectare area is a former raised bog , in which peat was extracted until the post-war years . Even today, ring-shaped walls can be seen in the south of the moor, in which peat coal was produced until around 1860. Similar to charcoal, this was made by covering and igniting the peat.

The water level was lowered for peat extraction, so that the typical raised bog vegetation largely disappeared and birch trees spread. In 2001, the restoration of the bog began by Naturschutzring Aukrug eV, which for the water level by 1.5 m anstaute so that the remaining stocks of peat moss, floating mats and cotton grasses could spread again. The area is developed for tourism through a circular hiking trail.
