The medieval imagination Spectaculum ( MPS ) is a medieval - Festival , the first time in 1994 and since then held a guest each year at a number of locations in Germany. The festival attaches great importance to "creating an imaginative, lively world based on the Middle Ages". The motto of the event is “not authentic, but fantastic”.

history

Beginnings

The idea for the MPS arose at a medieval market that was set up for the 350th anniversary of the Drensteinfurt shooting club . Today's organizer of the MPS, Gisbert Hiller , liked the concept and contacted the person responsible for the local market. In cooperation with Fogelvrei Produktionen , the first festival as the Medieval Spectaculum took place under his leadership in the summer of 1994 . After a few years of partnership, differences arose about the future design of the markets. From 2005 Fogelvrei and Hiller decided to go their separate ways. The Medieval Spectaculum series remained in Hiller's hands.

renaming

After the markets had gained some prominence and in 2007 already 21 weekends were played, it was decided to change the name of the series from the 2008 season to Medieval Fantasy Spectaculum . On the one hand, the aim was to create a brand that could be identified as clearly as possible, and on the other hand, it wanted to emphasize that it was not an authentic medieval representation, but rather to create its own, imaginative world.

The MPS today

With over 1000 participants and previously up to 26 weekends at 20 locations in Germany, the MPS series is one of the largest medieval events in Germany and calls itself the "largest wandering medieval festival in the world". The number of locations fluctuates; While some locations are now even used several times, various event locations, including in Hesse and Bavaria, have been canceled due to a lack of visitors or due to official requirements. Many events took place for the last time, especially in the years 2017 to 2019. Many of these events were supposed to take place one last time in 2020, but were canceled due to the Covid19 pandemic.

In 2020, according to current efforts, only one event, advertised by the organizer as a "sculpture park", will take place over a period of 65 days in Bückeburg. This event has received approval from the city and the district of Schaumburg and has been taking place on weekends since July 24, 2020. According to the organizer, this is not a classic MPS, but there will be concerts and gastronomy as usual. The only other future event that the organizer is still planning for this year is the PLWM (see below), but it is still unclear whether this will receive approval.

Locations

Most of the time, the MPS take place at the same locations as in the previous year, although these change over and over again and so over 40 different venues have come together in the MPS's 25-year history. The following table gives an overview of the number of events per year and location since 2003. The specified number does not correspond to the individual days, but to the occasions. In most cases, an MPS event takes place on Saturday and Sunday. The dates planned for the future are also included.

Fantastic lights Christmas market Dortmund

Fantastic lights Christmas market in Fredenbaumpark

Christmas market events have been running under the name "Fantastic Christmas Lights" (PLWM) since 2015 and are carried out directly by the MPS. Like the MPS (until 2019), they take place in the Fredenbaumpark in Dortmund and are an integral part of the calendar.

Differences compared to the normal MPS are the Christmas lighting and drinks, a bridge over the lake and heated tents heated with gas mushrooms. In the following years everything was enlarged and the lighting expanded, as the number of visitors grew from year to year. With just under a month to set up and a duration of around 6 weeks, the event is one of the most demanding and longest in the entire MPS calendar. Game days are Thursday to Sunday and (mostly) the entire week before Christmas Eve.

It was worth mentioning the New Year's Eve celebration until 2018, when the Christmas market was open until the New Year.

2018

The first change that was untypical for an MPS was made in 2018. In previous years, the entry price was for everything on the Christmas market. Since the high prices on Saturday by the top-class musicians put off visitors who did not want to see them, the prices for the concerts and the Christmas market were separated for that day. Since then there has been a ticket for the Christmas market and one for the concerts of the main artists on Saturdays.

This year the number of visitors increased significantly. According to the organizer, the event cost € 2 million.

Also worth mentioning this year was the announcement by the city of Dortmund to reduce the number of events in Fredenbaumpark. The MPS in Dortmund fell victim to this decision at Whitsun from 2020 - but not the PLWM for the time being.

2019

In March 2019, the PLWM received the permits for the 2019, 2020 and 2021 seasons from the city of Dortmund. The resulting greater planning security and the significantly higher number of visitors therefore resulted in high investments this year. Larger counters were procured, the paths were widened as much as possible and € 100,000 was invested in the parking lot situation that had caused problems the year before. In addition, they had large dinosaur figures made and plans to exhibit them in a forest property next to the Christmas market. There is also a dragon forest for the first time.

The event ends for the first time in the same year. In previous years, the Christmas market had opened beyond New Year's Eve.

2020

It is not yet known whether the PLWM will take place in 2020.

The plan was to enlarge the dinosaur forest further this year.

music

According to a music festival, some bands from the Middle Ages or related genres always play on the markets, spread over three to five stages, depending on the size of the market. There are often several performances per band and game day, which is usually followed in the evening by a larger final concert followed by a fire show.

Jugglers and showmen

Appropriate artistic representations are an important part of the medieval-looking experience. There are acrobatic performances but also all kinds of jugglers , similar to today's circus clowns or magicians, both for adults and for children.

Some of the characters shown have a special tradition in the MPS series, above all the monk Brother Rectus , who acts as the moderator of the markets, still supported by the market governor Eduard von Sonnenberg , whose actor withdrew for family reasons. Another regular guest at the markets since 2009 is Death .

There is also a falconry show, mounted tournaments, a market dance, a dress award ceremony and a Bruchenball tournament.

Army camp

Also regularly represented are the army camps, groups that camp on the MPS site in a medieval way. The participants are ordinary visitors who have previously applied with their concept for the warehouse and who contribute to the general atmosphere with their presentation.

Market life

The offer at the various stands ranges from jewelery to medieval clothing to appropriate weapons and instruments. Craftsmen, some of whom demonstrate their skills on site and offer their goods, are also represented. There are also various catering options based on the Middle Ages.

Means of payment

A special feature since 2009 has been the parallel currency called “Goldtaler” on the markets. These are embossings with various motifs relating to the festival context, the face value of which corresponds to your purchase value in euros during the event. There are denominations of 1/2, 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 25 and 50 gold thalers, which all stands on every MPS are obliged to accept.

Christmas market in Telgte

At Christmas time, in addition to the usual wandering markets, there are Christmas markets organized by the MPS. From 2008 to 2014, the market on the Planwiesen in Telgte took place annually on the four weekends in Advent. It was not organized directly by the MPS, but by "DiTo-event". However, it ran under the MPS brand.

Unsolvable difficulties with the parking situation, the persistent risk of flooding and safety concerns arising from the increasing number of visitors then led the organizers to relocate the market to Dortmund in 2015 . Since then, it has been carried out directly by the MPS.

MPS concert party

In 2013 the "MPS Music Festival" took place in the Westfalenhalle 1 in Dortmund as a season opener. The reason was the 20th anniversary of the market series and the 50th birthday of Gisbert Hiller. A repetition in April 2014 was initially planned for two days, but was cut to one day due to insufficient ticket sales. From 2015 the festival no longer took place.
