Tannenhausen is a district of the district town of Aurich in the Aurich district in East Friesland , Lower Saxony .

geography

Tannenhausen is located in the middle of a sandy heather area. On the outskirts is the largest raised bog lake in Germany with 89.2 hectares (0.892 square kilometers) , the " Eternal Sea ". A former gravel pit , which has become a popular bathing lake for the region ( bathing lake Tannenhausen ) , is particularly popular . The Silbersee in the adjacent Meerhusener Forest (Dietrichsfelder Straße) is also popular. The lake is located in the Bernuthsfeld district. The surrounding forest area extends over the districts of Tannenhausen, Dietrichsfeld and Sandhorst. However, swimming is not permitted in this forest lake.

history

Tannenhausen developed through the settlement of the high moors north of Aurich with colonists on the basis of the Prussian land reclamation edict of 1765. In 1801/02 the Aurich rent master Julius Dietrich Tannen (1752–1829) founded the colony Tannendorf, later Tannenhausen. On July 1, 1972, Tannenhausen was incorporated into the city of Aurich. and is now part of Aurich. In recent years the population has increased steadily, in 2005 there were 1,845 inhabitants. This is due, among other things, to the fact that Tannenhausen has been developed into a local recreation area and tourist attraction since the 1970s . This includes a large holiday home area.

politics

Together with the Georgsfeld district, Tannenhausen has a five-member local council. Local mayor is Gerda Küsel (SPD).

Culture and sights

  • The large stone grave in Tannenhausen is the only one in East Frisia from which noteworthy remains have survived. There are two cap stones and a bearing stone (East Fr. Low German called Botter, Brood un Kääs). The neighboring burial chamber is a replica of the original location.
  • 1907 north of Tannenhausen in the bog with the man of Bernuthsfeld a bog body found from the 7th or 8th century. His remains are shown together with his clothing in the East Frisian State Museum in Emden .
  • The Meints mill , located south of the large stone grave, is the smallest earth Dutchman in Lower Saxony with a height of around 6.5 meters .
  • The cemetery for Soviet prisoners of war is just outside the village. At least 86 people were buried here. They were housed as Soviet prisoners of war or as Eastern workers in the Tannenhausen forced labor camp and had to work in an ammunition plant of the Navy , the Aurich-Tannenhausen naval artillery arsenal . Testimony suggests that more than 200 bodies were buried here.

Economy and Infrastructure

A so-called multi-purpose area in the middle of the village attracts thousands of visitors to trade fairs, open-air concerts and other major events every year. Tannenhausen is about 6 kilometers from the Aurich town center.

There is a primary school in the village.
