The Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation Ecclesia in America by Pope John Paul II was delivered on January 22, 1999 in Mexico .

The document contains the results of the first joint synod of the Roman Catholic American bishops, accepted by the Pope and expanded by him . This took place in Rome from November 16 to December 12, 1997 and emphasized the unity of America and the importance of the local churches as instruments of unity and thus the vision of a future America with a just society on the one hand with the concept of a new evangelization of the connected across the continent on the other side.

The Eucharist is the center of the community and the bishops, priests , deacons and religious communities are involved in it . It is important to introduce the laity and their families to renewal, and therefore the element of community is an important challenge for the Christian family. Church relations with the Jewish communities and with other non-Christian religions should not be neglected in this task .

In this letter the Pope devotes himself to the special meaning of solidarity . It shows ways to solidarity and emphasizes the special power of Christian solidarity. The aim is to strengthen human rights , fight corruption and drug abuse and integrate marginalized groups into the community. The problem of immigration and the resulting conflicts with locals are particularly important .

There are theological addressed main areas with which the new evangelization and the proclamation of the Gospel belongs. Primarily this includes education and training, the use of the mass media and the evangelization of culture. In this context, reference is also made to the decree “ Ad gentes ” issued by the Second Vatican Council . The document concludes with a prayer to Jesus Christ for the families of America.
