New evangelization or new evangelization , Wiederevangelisierung or re-evangelization describes a renewed evangelization in regions where the Christian faith has been home very long, but by the progressive secularization has lost importance. This differs from the first evangelization, both of which belong to the tasks of the Christian mission .

In his Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii nuntiandi , Pope Paul VI. 1975 evangelization as the main task of the Catholic Church . Pope John Paul II followed up on this in 1990 in the encyclical Redemptoris Missio and emphasized that a renewal and reconsideration of the faith must take place in countries with a Christian tradition.

Pope Benedict XVI established the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization in 2010 , emphasizing that the New Evangelization should be characterized by a renewed inner drive, it should “seek new ways of proclamation that are appropriate to the times”.

According to Bishop Rino Fisichella , President of the Council, “there are at least twenty different definitions of the new evangelization”.

The thirteenth general assembly of the Synod of Bishops on the "New Evangelization for the Transmission of the Christian Faith" met from October 7th to 28th, 2012

Many spiritual communities are committed to the new evangelization. Some emerged specifically as new evangelization communities with the purpose of contributing to the renewal of the good news . This includes, for example, Nightfever , a project in which passers-by in pedestrian zones are invited to churches that are open at night.
