Werner Schade

Werner Schade (* 1934 in Breslau ) is a German art historian and museum curator. He is the author of the standard work The Cranach family of painters and for many years was director of the Kupferstichkabinett of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin .

Life

As the son of Paul Schades, an officer with the rank of officer at the Wehrmachtsversorgungsamt Liegnitz , Schade first grew up there, from 1945 in Luckenwalde, Brandenburg . From 1952 to 1956 he studied art history at the University of Jena and at the Humboldt University in Berlin . He then worked at the Weimar Art Collections until 1958 and then at the Kupferstichkabinett of the Dresden State Art Collections . In 1963 he moved to the Institute for Monument Preservation in East Berlin . In 1965 he received his doctorate from the University of Leipzig with a thesis on Dresden drawings 1550–1650.

From 1971 he worked at the Kupferstichkabinett of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, was its director from 1983 to 1991, and curated exhibitions of the works of contemporary artists there. In 1988 he took part in the exhibition “ Beuys before Beuys”, which was shown both in the Federal Republic of Germany and at the Academy of Arts of the GDR . In the course of the merger of the West and East Berlin Kupferstichkabinette, Schade went to the Anhaltische Gemäldegalerie Dessau as director for several years in 1991 .

He has been married to Maria, daughter of the painter Alfred Teichmann , since 1962 and has two sons with her. He has lived in Berlin in the Nicolaihaus since 1968 .
