Location of Spekendorf in the Aurich city area

Spekendorf is a district of Aurich in East Friesland , Lower Saxony .

geography

Spekendorf is located in the eastern part of the Aurich district and borders the district of Wittmund in the Hohebarg district near Ardorf . The place is about 15 kilometers from Aurich. The place is now part of the city of Aurich and has close connections to the neighboring towns of Middels and Ogenbargen . Geographically, the place is located on a Geest foothill. Sands , sediments, marl and rubble form the subsoil. Post-glacial moor formations are present in the immediate vicinity, particularly the Pfalzdorfer moor.

A brick factory in Spekendorf once used the clay deposits and produced the typical East Frisian bricks .

history

In 1998 Spekendorf celebrated its first documentary mention 420 years ago with an extensive festival program. The occasion of the celebrations was also to point out the first evidence of settlement 1000 years ago.

The area around Spekendorf is an ancient settlement area. The church was built in the neighboring town of Middels as early as 1200 . In connection with economic changes in the early Middle Ages , especially the intensification of rye cultivation and the emergence of the guests (strip-like arable land), settlement also began in these areas. Already in 1578 a Johann tho Spekendorf can be proven as the owner of the yard. The place is not a typical East Frisian church village , so there is no place of worship. Here the connection to the church village of Middels is of central importance.

Agricultural colonization in particular has been the focus for centuries. Vast heathland with nutrient-poor soils (Podzol soils) were cultivated for agriculture.

Large sheep farms also used the "wasteland" to raise sheep. As in other East Frisian Geest villages, the "wasteland" (common pasture) was divided up in the 19th century. Around 1850 there were six courtyards (plaats) and eight wharf sites in Spekendorf that were involved in the common division. A rural Thieplatz was also laid out in the village and thus formed the Loog, i.e. the center of the village. The water course flowing to the east, also known as Speke , could have given rise to the place name.

On July 1, 1972, Spekendorf was incorporated into the city of Aurich.

politics

Spekendorf has a five-person local council together with the districts of Langefeld and Middels .

The local mayor is Arnold Gossel (CDU).

Economy and Infrastructure

New building areas have significantly upgraded the village today. The new housing estates on the road to Middels testify to this positive development. Shops are available in nearby Middels. Boßelsport has always been firmly anchored in Spekendorf, also because of the good road conditions.
