Georgsfeld is a district of the city of Aurich in East Friesland .

geography

The place is in the northwest of the district town and borders on the two neighboring districts of Aurich and Tannenhausen . In addition, Georgsfeld borders the communities of Großheide and Südbrookmerland , including the districts of Moordorf and Ost-Victorbur . The suburb Abelitzmoor also belongs to the district.

history

Georgsfeld is the youngest of the 21 districts of Aurich: the moor colony was built between 1846 and 1848 on a road that connects Moordorf with Tannenhausen. The moor colony was named on February 7, 1852 in honor of the then ruler of East Frisia, Georg V of Hanover . East Frisia belonged to the Kingdom of Hanover between 1815 and 1866. The place was initially a pure street village , but later developed into a looser scattered settlement , albeit with a focus on today's county road.

During the Weimar Republic, Georgsfeld was a KPD stronghold within what is now the city. Starting from the neighboring Moordorf, a contiguous area developed from Georgsfeld and Walle via Moordorf to Victorbur , in which the KPD had more than 500 members. They faced severe persecution after the NSDAP came to power . In Abelitzmoor, the National Socialists set up a prison camp, whose inmates were used to colonize the bog. Georgsfeld has been part of Aurich since July 1, 1972.

politics

Georgsfeld has a five-member local council together with the Tannenhausen district .

Local mayor is Gerda Küsel (SPD).

Economy and Infrastructure

The Georgsfeld district is characterized by the Tannenhausener Moor . The Abelitz-Moordorf Canal, built in the 1880s and created by the Prussian state to improve drainage of the fiscal moors , runs through it . The canal ends - contrary to the original plans to continue to Esens - in the Tannenhausener Moor in the border area between Georgsfeld and Tannenhausen. In contrast to the neighboring municipality of Südbrookmerland, it has never played a major role in inland waterway transport in the Georgsfeld area. Nevertheless, it has an important function in draining the area.

Georgsfeld is home to one of the first wind farms that currently houses the largest wind turbines from Aurich manufacturer Enercon , the Georgsfeld wind farm . The district is structured as a whole agriculturally.
