Kirchdorf is a district of the city of Aurich in East Frisia .

geography

The place is in the south of the city and borders on the municipality of Ihlow , there on the district of Ludwigsdorf . To the west lie the districts of Aurich Rahe and Haxtum, northeast and east Popens Schirum . The northern boundary is the Ems-Jade Canal , which separates Kirchdorf from the Aurich city center. While the core city north of the canal is densely populated, there are only smaller town centers in the church village to the south, otherwise scattered settlements. In addition to the village of Kirchdorf, these are Middelburg , Kirchdorferfeld and Westerfeld.

history

The first documentary mention could be in the Werdener Arbaren . In the 10th century "in Kiricthorpe" is mentioned there. However, it is also conceivable that it is a different church village in East Friesland, although no place in East Friesland bears this name. Kirchdorf is one of the so-called "Negen Loogen" (high German: nine villages), which were located around the Aurich core town that was later built. These are Extum, Haxtum, Walle, Sandhorst, Wallinghausen, Egels, Popens and - as the seat of the church - Kirchdorf. It was only with the construction of the first Lamberti Church in Aurich around 1200 that Kirchdorf lost its religious function and had to relinquish it to the newly founded town of Aurich. There are no longer any remaining remains of the medieval church.

The Kirchdorferfeld settlement was founded in 1798 and was initially called Kükenhütten, based on the poor houses. The street name Kükenhüttenweg is a reminder of this. Westerfeld is dated to around the same time, the settlement was first listed by name on a map published in 1804. In 1965, seven years before the Lower Saxony regional reform , the four then independent communities Extum, Haxtum, Rahe and Kirchdorf merged to form the Upstalsboom community. This lasted seven years, after which the named districts were incorporated into the city of Aurich on July 1, 1972.

The district is partly shaped by wall hedges . It is connected to traffic by Kreisstraße 11 from downtown Aurich via Kirchdorf, Ihlowerfehn and Simonswolde to the Riepe junction on the federal motorway 31 .

politics

Kirchdorf has a seven-member local council together with the districts of Haxtum , Extum and Rahe .

Local mayor is Antje Harms (SPD).
