Ihlowerfehn is the capital of the municipality of Ihlow in the Aurich district in East Friesland and had 1964 inhabitants in August 2013. The place was founded in 1780 as a feudal settlement and in the following decades developed into the center of what is now the municipality of Ihlow. Ihlowerfehn is connected to the district town of Aurich and the Riepe junction on the A31 via the 111 district road.

Ihlowerfehn is located in the center of the municipality of Ihlow, about nine kilometers south-southwest of Aurich. In the local area dominate Gley-Podzol soils, which at heights of 0.8 to 1.4  m above sea level. Rise above sea ​​level . In the west there is an area with raised bog and top culture soil, in the east Gley-Grund dominates. The Ihlower Forst extends east of the village , a 350-hectare wooded area that is a popular local recreation area. In the 1990s, the Ihler Meer leisure area was created in the village : an artificial lake around which residential areas and leisure facilities are grouped.

In Ihlowerfehn there is the town hall of the community, a multi-purpose hall and the Hermann Tempel comprehensive school , which is the community's school center. In recent years, the infrastructure has been significantly expanded through the establishment of retail stores.

history

Lammert Harms Aden, Haye Gerdes Aden, Siebe (rt) Ecken Wultzen, Lücke Claessen and Otto Claessen founded the Fehnsiedlung in 1780 in a high moor west of the Ihlower Forest that was formerly belonging to the Ihlow Monastery. The settlement has its origin on a northern branch of the Crooked Depth, the lower section of the Heron Depth. This was expanded and later extended to the west. In 1804 the place was first referred to as "Ihlower Vehn". The current spelling has been documented since 1852. The Fehn settlement was named after the old monastery seat of Ihlow. In ecclesiastical terms Ihlowerfehn belonged 1780-1790 to parish Weene and 1790 to 1899 for the parish Bangstede . The independent parish Ihlow was founded on June 22, 1899. The foundation stone of the Ihlow church was laid on August 6, 1901 and the inauguration on February 9, 1902. At the end of March 1902 the parish collaboration was converted into an independent parish office, the parsonage was completed on April 29, 1902 and Pastor Siefkes was introduced in May 1902.

On July 1, 1972, Ihlowerfehn was incorporated into the new municipality of Ihlow. The local council elected the place on December 4th, 1972 with a majority of one vote as the headquarters of the local government.
