history

The earliest evidence of the presence of humans in the area of the present-day village is a find dated to the Stone Age.

Ostersander is mentioned for the first time in 1593, but is likely to be much older. It is assumed that Ostersander was founded by settlers from Shirum in the early Middle Ages before the year 1000.

The town received a boost in population development after the Christmas flood of 1717 . At that time, many people in the neighboring town of Lübbertsfehn had become homeless. In Ostersander, which is higher up, they were assigned a new settlement near the fen line.

With the beginning of the road construction , the place was connected to the road network in 1849.

With Schirum, Westersander and Weene, Ostersander formed a parish whose church in Weene was built on a terp . In the 17th century Hüllenerfehn and Lübbertsfehn were also incorporated, and in 1798 Ludwigsdorf was finally incorporated.

Today the place is characterized by agriculture.
