The village extends on a very low ridge . The high moor between Simonswolde and Riepe once reached as far as the Dorfstrasse. The oldest row of houses to the east stands on the former moor edge, which has been artificially raised by a one-meter-thick layer of sand. In the east of the road behind the courtyards are very long, narrow parcels of land ( Riepster Ackers ), which were driven into the moor as “upways” . To the west of the village road and the village stream, the Delling spreads out, which used to be the common property of the villagers and where countless geese ( Riepste Göös ) grazed. The Wrantepott settlement on the Ems-Jade Canal also belongs to the Riepe district . The A 31 runs around four kilometers south of the town with the Riepe exit .

history

Riepe lies on a flat, narrow ridge that delimits the southeastern edge of the lowland from the old marriage and ridding . This ridge was called "de hooge Rype". The name Riepe is also derived from the Latin "Rand"; = Rype. It is believed that the area was mainly populated by those settlers who were displaced from the Leybucht area by devastating storm surges in the early Middle Ages . Riepe is possibly the oldest of these settlements, as it once had the longest extensions. Riepe has a church that was built before the Reformation, which, like that of Simonswolde , was apparently located in a different spot that was at risk of flooding. The current church was built in 1554. The old church was possibly a chapel from the 12th or 13th century and was located in the area "de Oldehof". Both church sites were connected by a path for a long time. The church tower is known as the "tea box". The bell tower only received this somewhat stylistically atypical roof covering after the church suffered severe damage to the foundation after the floods in 1717 from the Christmas flood. The area around Riepe was heavily influenced by water until the 1960s. Many areas were under water during the winter months, so that traffic and the transport of goods were often done with dinghies. The areas that lay directly to the west of the Ridding and represented the old flood basin of the Ridding were used as communal pastures ("Oll Gatt").

In the past there were many pipe cutters, duck hunters and fishermen in the village of Riepe who went about their business in the water-rich area with the help of the so-called "Riepster dinghy" .

Riepe was known for breeding geese, hence an old breed of goose called "Riepster Gans" originated. This breed of goose has survived with few animals up to our days.

On July 1, 1972, Riepe was incorporated into the new municipality of Ihlow .

politics

The current (2013) local mayor is Erich Harms, his deputy is Burkhard Smidt.

Attractions

The distinctive steeple of the Riepster Church is called "Riepster Teebürs" (= tea caddy ) because of its shape . Like many houses in the town, it was badly damaged by the Christmas flood of 1717 . 15 people drowned. A flood mark can still be seen on the church tower today. In 2005, some old coins and a more than 450 year old offering box were found there.

In the Schlickmuseum Riepe, visitors learn how the survey project of the Emden-Riepe Water and Soil Association from 1954 to 1994 changed the landscape of Riepe and Riepsterhammrich. More than 100 million tons of harbor silt from Emden were fed into several hectare-sized flushing fields in pipelines that were kilometers long using suction and flushing pipes in order to create valuable soil for agriculture. To honor the regional largest building project of the post-war period, the water and soil association and the local citizens' association set up the "Riepster Schlickmuseum" in the attic of the Sparkasse (former school building) in Riepe. It emerged from an exhibition held in 1993. Numerous documents, models, graphics, images, slides and films were collected for this purpose. In March 2019, the Schlickmuseum Riepe moved to the former office and exhibition space of a car workshop in the immediate vicinity.

Riepe is also known for its outdoor pool, which was converted into a natural pool in 2007. There is also a primary school and playgrounds in the village . Due to the industrial areas “Leegmoor” on Landesstraße 1 and “Am Alten Handelsplatz” on Emder Straße, the place has outstanding economic importance for the community. One of the largest wind farms in East Friesland, the Ihlow wind farm of the Aurich Enercon group, is located southwest of the village, initially with 26 and since 2010 with 34 large wind turbines.

Personalities

The graphic artist, draftsman and illustrator Hinrikus Bicker, called Bicker-Riepe, was born as the third son of master carpenter Andreas Bikker (1886–1975) and his wife Anna, nee. Neumann (1886–1959), born on July 21, 1925 in Riepe, where he attended elementary school. Bikker died on February 6, 1997 in Aurich. Because of his independent woodcut work with religious themes, Hinrikus Bicker-Riepe is one of the most important artists in East Friesland. In the Riepe primary school there is a large, colored wall graffito ("Riepster landscape") from 1960.
