history

Bangstede was first mentioned in documents in 1420, but is probably considerably older. The town's church was built towards the end of the 13th century, but it belonged to the Aurich parish until the end of the 15th century . References to two castle complexes in the village have not yet been confirmed. The Bangsteder Verlaat ( Low German for lock) goes back to a lock that was built in 1799 on the forerunner of today's Ems-Jade Canal , the Treckfahrtstief . In the 18th and 19th centuries, an economic boom led to the increased influx of craftsmen in the village, which was large for the time.

When Ihlowerfehn was created in 1780 , the place was under canonical law Bangstede, which led to major conflicts and in 1899 finally to the establishment of a separate parish in Ihlowerfehn.

On July 1, 1972, Bangstede was incorporated into the new community of Ihlow.
