Christine Schmitz

Christine Schmitz (born March 9, 1958 in Duppach ) is a German classical philologist .

Schmitz studied classical philology and history (especially ancient history ) at the University of Bonn , where she created the indexes for Otto Zwierlein's critical commentary on the tragedies of Seneca (Stuttgart 1986, pp. 501–559) as a student assistant . After the first state examination (1986) she worked from 1988 to 1990 as a research assistant at the Patristic Commission of the German Academies of Sciences . In the winter semester 1990/1991 she received her doctorate in Bonn . For her dissertation, The Cosmic Dimension in Seneca's Tragedies , she was awarded the GEFFRUB Prize of the University of Bonn in 1992.

After completing her doctorate, Schmitz initially worked as a research assistant at the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae in Munich, and from 1992 as a research assistant at the Department of Classical Philology at the University of Marburg . After her habilitation with the work Das Satirische in Juvenals Satiren (1997), Schmitz received a C2 university professorship for Classical Philology (especially Latin Studies ) at the University of Marburg in 1998 . After serving as professorships at the universities of Rostock , Gießen and Mainz , she accepted the chair for Classical Philology (Latin Studies) at the University of Münster in 2002 . Since 2013 she has been a full member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts .
