Alexander Arweiler

Alexander Henry Arweiler (born November 7, 1967 ) is a German classical philologist ( Latinist ).

Life

After graduating from high school in 1987 and completing military service, Arweiler began studying Classical Philology, Philosophy and Catholic Theology in Bonn and Rome (1990-92) in the winter semester of 1988/1989 . In June 1995 he passed the first state examination. In February 1998 he received his doctorate with his dissertation on the biblical poetry of Alcimus Avitus. He then took part in the exhibition catalog “Manuscripts of the Cologne Cathedral Library” and was a postdoctoral fellow at the graduate school “Commentary in Antiquity and the Middle Ages” in Bochum , as well as a scholarship from the German Research Foundation . From April 1999 Arweiler was a research assistant at the Institute for Classical Archeology at Kiel University with Konrad Heldmann . In November 2002 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on Cicero's rhetoric , and in 2004 he was appointed professor of classical philology with a focus on Latin studies at the University of Münster .

Arweiler deals with Cicero's speeches and works on rhetoric, as well as with specialist writers from the late Roman Republic and the Imperial Era , with Horace and Christian Latin poetry from late antiquity . He also deals with the theory and history of genres, problems of literary representation and Roman aesthetics and semiotics . Together with Bardo Maria Gauly he publishes the “Library of Latin Literature of Late Antiquity”.
