Rudolf Güngerich, the son of the judge Gustav Güngerich (1872 – after 1942), took part in World War I after graduating and then studied Classical Philology at the universities of Frankfurt am Main , Freiburg im Breisgau , Munich and Berlin . After receiving his doctorate in Freiburg (1927), he worked as an assistant at the University of Giessen . In 1929 he moved to Berlin University, where his work was impaired by frequent illness. In the time of National Socialism he rejected the ruling ideology. He was in contact with the Latinist Eduard Norden , for whom he obtained books from the library from 1938. At a lecturer camp in February 1938, Güngerich was rated 3b (“unusable”) by the camp commanders. Nevertheless, Güngerich achieved his habilitation in 1939 . Shortly afterwards he was drafted into World War II.

After his return from captivity (1946) Güngerich worked for a short time as a lecturer at the University of Hamburg . In the same year he moved to the University of Münster , where he renewed his habilitation and was appointed associate professor in 1951. In 1953 he moved to the University of Würzburg as a full professor , where he was active in teaching and research until his retirement (1968). Since 1963 he worked as a flag reader for the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae .

Güngerich has dealt with ancient coastal descriptions since his studies. His dissertation was a critical edition of the Latin-Greek Anaplus Bospori by Dionysius of Byzantium . In addition, Güngerich published some reviews and essays as well as the volume The coastal description in Greek literature ( Orbis antiquus , No. 4). His late work was a commentary on the Dialogus de oratoribus des Tacitus , which was published posthumously in 1980 by Heinz Heubner .
