Hermann Schöne (philologist)

Hermann Schöne (born April 18, 1870 in Halle an der Saale , † May 20, 1941 in Berlin ) was a German classical philologist .

Life

Hermann Schöne was the son of the archaeologist Richard Schöne and Cäcilie geb. Härtel, a daughter of the music publisher Hermann Härtel . His mother died a few days after he was born.

He studied classical philology in Bonn with Hermann Usener , where he received his doctorate on June 16, 1893. He then went on research and educational trips to the Mediterranean and worked in Cologne. In 1897 he received financial support from the Prussian Academy of Sciences for his edition of Apollonios von Kition .

In 1898 Schöne completed his habilitation at the University of Berlin . In 1903 he went to Königsberg as an associate professor , in 1906 as a full professor to Basel , in 1909 to Greifswald and finally in 1916 to Münster . In 1927/1928 he was the rector of this university. In 1935 he retired .

His main research area was the ancient history of medicine (his dissertation was dedicated to Aristoxenus , another work by Apollonios von Kition ). From 1903 he was a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute .
