Rudolf Heinrich Klausen (born April 24, 1807 in Altona , † March 17, 1840 in Greifswald ) was a German classical philologist .

Life

Rudolf (also Rudolph ) Heinrich Klausen came from a family of pastors in Schleswig. His father Gottlieb Ernst Klausen (1762-1851) was a philologist and from 1794 rector of the high school in Altona , which his son Rudolf Heinrich also attended. He then studied philology and history at the universities of Kiel , Berlin (1826, among others, with Hegel ), Leipzig and Bonn . In Bonn he was promoted to Dr. phil. doctorate and habilitation in the same year. As a private lecturer, he held lectures for nine years at the University of Bonn, which appointed him extraordinary professor in 1833. In the winter semester 1835/36 the students Emanuel Geibel and Karl Marx attended the lecture “ Aeschylus Choephoren ” with him.

Klausen's research focus was Greek literature. Starting from Aeschylus , Hesiod and the Greek historians, he examined the mythology and religion of the ancient Greeks. In his main work (1839) he examined the influence of the Greek religion on the Italian.

His writings, which also included critical editions of the Aeschylus tragedies, earned him a reputation among experts. In 1838 he was appointed to the University of Greifswald , initially as an associate professor because of his age. In 1840 he was appointed full professor. He died that same year at the age of 32.
