Eduard Hiller

Eduard Hiller (born April 14, 1844 in Frankfurt am Main ; † March 7, 1891 in Halle an der Saale ) was a German classical philologist who worked as a professor in Greifswald (1874–1876) and Halle (1876–1891).

Life

Hiller was already fascinated by ancient Greece in his childhood and youth. That is why he studied classical philology, German , Sanskrit , history and archeology at the grammar school Francofurtanum at the University of Bonn after graduating in 1862 . Friedrich Nietzsche and Erwin Rohde were among his fellow students . As early as 1866 Hiller received his doctorate on the basis of his dissertation ( Quaestiones Herodianeae in the Google book search) and acquired a license in German, history, Latin and Greek. He worked for two years as a teacher at a private school in Bonn, but quit in 1868 in order to pursue an academic career. So he achieved his habilitation in 1869. In 1874 he received two appointments from Prussian universities, from Greifswald and Halle . Hiller first went to Greifswald, but moved to Halle in 1876 after another call after Gottfried Bernhardy's death . Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff was his successor in Greifswald .

Hiller stayed in Halle until his death. He turned down a call to the University of Strasbourg (1885). After a trip to Greece in 1889, he worked in the academic year 1889/90 as rector of the University of Halle. Because of increasing health problems, Hiller took leave of absence in 1891, but still gave private lectures in his apartment. He died of diabetes mellitus in 1891 .
