Karl Praechter

Karl Praechter (born October 17, 1858 in Heidelberg , † February 18, 1933 in Halle an der Saale ) was a German classical philologist .

Life

Karl Praechter first studied theology at the University of Lausanne , later classical philology in Tübingen , Leipzig , Bonn and Marburg , where he received his doctorate in 1885. phil. received his doctorate .

From 1881 to 1887 Praechter worked as a high school teacher in Durlach and Bruchsal. He then deepened his studies at Berlin University , where he was particularly influenced by Hermann Diels and Eduard Zeller . In 1889 he completed his habilitation at the University of Bern , where he was appointed associate professor in 1897 and full professor of classical philology in 1899. In 1907 he moved to the University of Halle , where he worked until his retirement (1927).

Praechter's main research focus was ancient philosophy . He published numerous studies and source editions. His best-known work is the revision of Friedrich Ueberweg's outline of the history of philosophy , Volume 1: The ancient world , known as the “Ueberweg Praechter”. From 1907 until his death Praechter created three new editions of the work.

Praechter was a member of the Tübingen fraternity Derendingia .
