Hermann Hagen (philologist)
Hermann Hagen ( May 31, 1844 in Heidelberg - September 20, 1898 in Bern ) was a German-Swiss classical philologist .
Life
Hagen, son of the historian and politician Karl Hagen and Jeannette Martius, grandson of the theologian Friedrich Wilhelm Hagen , studied history in Bern , Heidelberg and Bonn from 1862 to 1865 . After completing his habilitation in 1865, he was a high school teacher in Bern, then taught there at the university. From 1878 he was a full professor of classical philology and from 1895 to 1896 rector.
He cataloged the Latin manuscripts in various libraries , wrote monographs on manuscript collectors, discovered two pastoral poems (carmina Einsidlensia), edited poems from Swiss libraries, published numerous Swiss inscriptions and devoted himself to the ancient declarations of yellowing. Hagen belonged to the Bernese Masonic lodge Zur Hope and directed the “Alpina” magazine of the Grand Lodge .
He was married to Rosa Hartmann.
