Life

Oskar von Allmen, the son of the carpenter and hotelier Fritz von Allmen and Margaritha geb. Zurflüh, attended secondary school in Wengen and the municipal grammar school in Bern and then studied classical philology at the universities of Bern and Berlin . His studies were broadly based: In addition to his main subjects, he also took courses in Sanskrit , Hebrew , Aramaic , Syriac and Assyrian ; later he learned Spanish , Arabic and Romansh . In 1923 he completed his studies in Bern with a doctorate to become a Dr. phil. from.

Oskar von Allmen's first job was at the daughter institute in Fetan , where he taught from 1923 to 1926. After a year of study in Berlin (1926/27), he was employed as a teacher for Latin and Greek at the municipal high school in Bern in 1927. From 1928 he held part-time lectures at the University of Bern, initially as a lecturer for Latin, from November 17, 1931 as an associate professor (associate professor for classical philology with special attention to Latin). Without having qualified as a professor , he received this professorship, which was created at the same time as a Greek professorship in order to secure the successor to the outgoing Otto Schulthess . Not even a year later, Oskar von Allmen died at the age of 34. Half a century later, Edgar Bonjour , his school friend and colleague at the municipal high school, reported in his memoirs that von Allmen “passed away in despair on the morning of his inaugural lecture” by shooting himself with his orderly rifle . Bonjour saw the scientific overstrain of his friend as the cause. Bonjour also published some letters from his friend (1987).

Oskar von Allmen mastered the Latin language, both spoken and written. For the commemorative publication for the 70th birthday of his academic teacher Otto Schulthess (1932) he wrote a congratulatory poem ( carmen gratulatorium ) in the meter of the Alcaeic stanza .
