Research priorities

One focus of his research is Plato's Atlantis - dialogues Timaeus and Critias . Nesselrath considers Atlantis - like Pierre Vidal-Naquet before him , but also the "silent majority" of the ancient scholars of all centuries - to be an invention of Plato to be understood as a parable and describes it as "ancient science fiction " because it is a science-based fictional one History.

He is also one of the leading German-speaking Lukian experts and in this context published a monograph on Lukian's Parasite Dialogue (based on his dissertation, see above); compare also his contributions to Lukian: "Friends of Lies" in the edition of the SAPERE series (Scripta Antiquitatis Posterioris ad Ethicam Religionemque pertinentia), which was published by the Scientific Book Society up to volume 9, from volume 10 by Mohr Siebeck.

His 2017 “text-faithful, yet legible transmission” of the histories of Herodotus was praised .

Nesselrath is also the editor of the Introduction to Greek Philology (Stuttgart / Leipzig 1997), which was translated into Greek in 2001 and into Italian in 2004.
