Life

Mitscherlich attended the Schulpforta boarding school and after excellent training in Latin and Greek began studying classical philology at the University of Göttingen in 1779 , where he became a student of Professor Christian Gottlob Heyne . In 1782 he moved to the Ilfeld Pedagogy as a collaborator (succeeding Friedrich August Wolf ). In 1785 he was appointed associate professor at the University of Göttingen and employed at the university library. In 1794 he was promoted to full professor, in 1806 appointed councilor and later a secret councilor of justice. He was the successor of his former teacher Heyne, on whom he wrote a Latin funerary inscription in 1812.

Mitscherlich's major academic writings all appeared or at least originated in the 18th century. His edition of Horace appeared in 1800. It is the only work to which greater importance has been attached. Mitscherlich was Vice Rector of the University of Göttingen in 1816, 1823/1824, 1824, 1829/1830 and 1830.
