Georg Ludolf Dissen
Georg Ludolf Dissen (born December 17, 1784 in Groß Schneen near Göttingen , † September 21, 1837 in Göttingen) was a German classical philologist .
Life
Dissen was the son of the pastor of Groß Schneen. At the age of 13 he became an orphan and was only able to get a free place in Schulpforta with the support of friends , where he was a student from 1798 to 1804. Here he met Friedrich Thiersch , who was the same age . After graduating from school, Dissen went to the University of Göttingen , where he studied Classical Philology . He was most impressed by Christian Gottlob Heyne of his teachers . After the exam, Dissen received his doctorate with the dissertation "De temporibus et modis verbi graeci" and began teaching at Göttingen University.
In his lectures he dealt with philological as well as philosophical topics. At this time he got to know August Böckh , with whom he maintained a lively exchange about subjects of philology. In 1812 Dissen accepted an appointment as associate professor at the University of Marburg . After only one and a half years, in autumn 1813, he returned to Göttingen with the same title to work with Friedrich Gottlieb Welcker , Ernst Karl Friedrich Wunderlich and Karl Otfried Müller . In 1817 Dissen was appointed full professor, and in 1832 as councilor. In 1833 he was elected as a full member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen , in 1834 he became a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . Most recently he was also a member of the board of directors of the Classical Philology Department. He died unexpectedly on September 21, 1837 at the age of 52.
Research and Teaching
As an academic teacher, Dissen was recognized for his conscientiousness and methodical work. These characteristics were also reflected in his three main works: the editions of Pindar , Tibullus and the speeches of Demosthenes . His text-critical procedures influenced the development of his student Karl Lachmann , the founder of modern text criticism . His Pindaredition was first published in August Böckh's Complete Edition (Leipzig 1811-1821) and later appeared independently under the title “Pindari opera ex recensione Boeckhii” (Gotha 1830). He made the edition of Tibullus based on the work of Heynes and his colleague Wunderlich, who died early. It was published under the title “Supplementum editionis Albii Tibulli Heynio-Wunderlichianae ed. Lud. Dissen ”1819 in Leipzig, as a separate edition (with comments from Karl Lachmann):“ Alb. Tibulli carmina ex recens. C. Laughter. passim mutata explic. Lud. Dissen ”(2 parts, Göttingen 1835). The Demosthenes speech For the wreath ( περὶ τοῦ Στεφάνου ) he published after the edition by Immanuel Bekker in Göttingen in 1837.
