Karl Friedrich Hermann (born August 4, 1804 in Frankfurt am Main , † December 31, 1855 in Göttingen ) was a German archaeologist .

Karl Friedrich Hermann, the son of the publisher Johann Christian Hermann (1750–1827), studied in Heidelberg and Leipzig under Friedrich Creuzer , Gottfried Hermann and Friedrich August Wilhelm Spohn , received his doctorate in 1824, made a monthly trip to Austria and Italy, completed his habilitation in 1826 Heidelberg, became full professor at the Philipps University of Marburg in 1832 (1837/38 and 1840/41 also its rector ), in 1842 as successor to Karl Otfried Müller's professor of philology and archeology and director of the philological and pedagogical seminars in Göttingen and died there on December 31, 1855

Hermann studied almost all areas of classical studies; with restless zeal he also worked as a teacher. His main work is that

  • Greek Antiquities Textbook . (numerous editions last 1913).
  • Religious Antiquities , 1846; 2nd edition by Stark, 1857; Part 3:
  • Private Antiquities , 1852; 2nd edition by Stark, 1870, a memorial of the most comprehensive reading and thorough research (a revision of the work in 4 volumes led by Hugo Blümner and Wilhelm Dittenberger appeared since 1882). Also worth mentioning are:
  • History and system of the Platonic philosophy (Heidelberg 1839, vol. 1; unfinished, reprint New York: Arno Press, 1976); after his death by Karl Gustav Schmidt published
  • Cultural history of the Greeks and Romans (Göttingen 1857–58, 2 vols.); the adaptation of Charikles by Wilhelm Adolf Becker for the 2nd edition (Leipzig 1854);
  • the excellent edition of Lukian's De conscribenda historia (Frankfurt 1828) and the text reviews of Plato (Leipzig 1851–53), Persius and Juvenal (1854).

This is followed by a large number of, in some cases extremely significant, treatises on Greek antiquities, mythology and history, ancient literary history, art archeology, ancient philosophy, and the criticism and explanation of ancient writers. Only a small part of them has been combined by him in Collected Treatises (Göttingen 1849).
