Walter Wimmel

Walter Wimmel (born September 27, 1922 in Krofdorf-Gleiberg ; † April 10, 2016 in Marburg ) was a German classical philologist .

Life and research

Walter Wimmel, the son of grammar school professor Wilhelm Wimmel, attended the grammar schools in Mosbach, Mannheim and Lahr / Black Forest and was drafted into the Wehrmacht in May 1941 after graduating. After military service and imprisonment, he began studying Classical Philology and Philosophy at the University of Freiburg in the winter semester 1945/46 . In 1948/1949 he spent two semesters at the University of Basel (with Peter von der Mühll , Karl Jaspers and Harald Fuchs ). On his return he was on 6 June 1950, the thesis observations on early Augustan poetry doctorate that Karl Buechner had suggested.

After his habilitation , Wimmel was hired as a university lecturer in Freiburg in 1957. His habilitation thesis was published in 1960 under the title Callimachos in Rome: The successor of his apologetic poetry in the Augustan period and shapes the view of ancient, especially Augustan Roman literature in its relationship and its dependence on Greek literature to this day. In 1962, Wimmel was appointed adjunct professor. In 1963 he moved to the Philipps University of Marburg , where he was given a full professorship for classical philology. He taught here until his retirement .

Walter Wimmel was mainly a Latinist . The focus of his research was Roman poetry from the Augustan period. He published numerous monographs and essays dealing with questions of genre, composition, motif and sources by the poets Tibullus , Virgil , Horace and others. a. employ.

On his 65th birthday, a volume with selected articles was published by Wimmel (1987); on his 75th birthday, a thematic commemorative publication with contributions that were dedicated to Walter Wimmel was published (1998). Another commemorative publication, which documents the contributions to an academic festival event on the occasion of Wimmel's 90th birthday and contains a complete list of his writings, was finally published in 2013.
