Vincent Buchheit

Vinzenz Buchheit (born October 5, 1923 in Neualtheim ; † February 11, 2008 in Gießen ) was a German classical philologist .

Life

Vinzenz Buchheit studied classical philology at the University of Munich and in 1952 with the dissertation studies Methodios of Olympos his doctorate , which he in expanded form under the same title in Berlin in 1958 Akademie-Verlag published. In 1957 he completed his habilitation in Saarbrücken and was appointed private lecturer . His habilitation thesis was published in 1960 under the title Investigations on the Theory of the Genos Epideiktikon from Gorgias to Aristotle .

In 1962, Buchheit accepted a call to the Justus Liebig University in Gießen to take on the newly founded professorship for Latin Studies , which he represented until his retirement in 1989.

Roman literature and its anchoring in the society of the time was one of the main research interests of Buchheit. He dealt with Virgil's image of Rome and poets , with ancient rhetoric and with church history. His edition of the rhetorician Quintilian (1959) is considered to be groundbreaking. Since 1969 he has published the series Studia et testimonia antiqua .
